Demonstrate Understanding of Energy in a physical system
Achievement Standard 92047
Forms of energy (Joules) and the formulae that indicate its form include:
Mechanical energy
kinetic energy, Ek = ½ mv2
gravitational potential energy, Ep = mgh
work, W= Fd (Watt)
Thermal energy
heat capacity, E (thermal) = mcΔT
latent heat, E (thermal) = mL
Electrical energy
P = VI (Watt)
V = IR
ΔE = Pt
A Physical System
A physical system refers to a defined space with either an object or interacting objects. Everything outside the physical system is known as the environment or surroundings.
Examples of a physical system include: thermos flask, an insulated home, electrical circuits, falling objects, the lifting of objects.
Change in a physical system is any change to the properties or the system's behavior.
Examples of changes include changes in:
starting height of a falling object
motion
the resistance of a wire
the temperature of an object.
Forms of Energy:
Mechanical energy
Thermal energy
Electrical energy
Energy Concepts:
energy transfer
energy transformation
conservation of energy
